Miles is obviously Marvin Candle's son.  Wink

I hope they are Dharma.

I would say that is a good possibility...

As a physicist I can tell you that light and electromagnetism go hand in hand. Light is electromagnetism. It's simply the range of electromagnetic energy within the visible band. The whole spectrum includes ewverything from microwaves, radio waves, and infra red, up to x-rays and gamma rays. Visible light is between infra red and ultra violet.

So well, when you say magnetism affects light, you have to keep in mind that light is in fact magnetism, and electricity, combined together in a propagating electromagnetic field.

Also, anything that has to do with electromagnetism in the end boils down to the basic laws, which include Faraday's induction law, among others.

wow, we have a physicist on board!
Metalstrm, as a physicist how do you think that the electromagnetic aspects of the island, would affect the scattering of the light like Faraday said.

All this talk of refraction and deflection on the island, it may give the term "get bent" a whole new meaning.   Wink

Lol ^ Hmm, I don't know of any effect of the kind. It would have to be something that changes the properties of the reflecting (scattering, actually) surfaces themselves I presume...

Edit: On second thought, I don't think anything of the like is possible. You'd have to change the surface properties physically, rather than electromagnetically, for example by smoothing rough surfaces so that they reflect rather than scatter light.

Who knows?  Maybe Faraday's never been in a sub-tropical area before and he's not used to the way the sun reflects off the moisture in the ..... nah.  Something's going on!  This is Lost....

yeah, something weird is definitely affecting the light.  i have been watching season one, and in one scene, there will be a group out in the sun on the beach, and then the next scene is a dark, rainy jungle trek.  after the rain clears...sun again!  it's like they have intermittent nights or something.  i dunno.  Huh  (hi e!)

Hey to you too!  I was wondering wherst you were!

I love the new characters.  So much more to talk about.  Faraday and his lights, Miles and his, um, 'abilities', Charlotte's hot-not-hot status and another drunk on the island, or not.  Guess he'll have to give it up!

i've been busy writing a paper about the japanese mafia.  yay?  anyway, yeah.  it's cool that we have a physicist here!  hey new physicist lost geek (Metalstrm!)  welcome!  teach us all about light and electromagnetism, please?  flowers

Is there some sort of way that maybe for some weird reason, thing on the island are backwards, and light reacts to rough objects as if they were smooth and vice-versa?

Differences in the light reflection/refraction wouldn't be visible to the naked eye though. Daniel must have prior knowledge of something being wrong with the light to have even mentioned it in my opinion.

As for light and dark - hasn't the whole programme had many references to this. The only thing that bothers me is that you would have thought one of the Losties would have mentioned it by now.. "ooh, isnt it strange how its light one minute and dark the next?"

charlie mentioned it in the first episode  Grin
something along the lines of "Hey guys, is this normal? Kind of… day turning into night, you know? End of the world type weather. Is this—guys?"

Hehe thanks again Smiley As it happens, I'm a mafia fan too so I'd like to know all about that too... Italian/Italian-American though.. hehe.

There's so much stuff about electromagnetism I wouldn't know where to start hehe. But it sure is interesting, and weird at times. And light is linked to practically all the theories of physics. The speed of light (in vacuum) is one of the very few fundamental constants of the universe upon which most other theories are based on.

If you wanna look at some weird effects of light look up Cherenkov radiation (caused by particles travelling faster than light in some medium) and slow light (slowing down light quite literally to a walking pace).
