 tt1
i started looking idly at properties for sale in hawaii the last couple of nights, thinking about the possibility of whether i could afford to move there and find a bit of land where i could live as if i were 'living LOST". that's not such a farfetched idea. i could picture how it could be done.
but then when i woke up this morning, i had a bigger idea. one that i couldn't do alone. but if enough people, the world over, wanted to do it, i bet we could:

what would it take to recreate the world of LOST on one of the islands of hawaii and make it a real, living community where you could move to and live as if you--we--really were 'on the island' and living  like the Losties???

i posted this in this topic rather than somewhere else, because  if such a place actually came into being, then whoever moved there to  live in it really WOULD be living in An Aleternate Reality Game.  think of it as something like what the rennaissance Faire  members do. the SCA.[ society for creative anachronism].
I'm talking here about a tract of land, somewhere in hawaii, where you could come and live or just come to on vacation like a timeshare for a couple of weeks, where the layout would take pains to recreate the beach and camp where the plane came down, the swan hatch, yemi's beechcraft, New Otherton, the cages of the Hydra, the Caves, and the Dharma Initiative for _real_.  By that, i mean an actual dedicated community for the present times, working on Green Alternatives of all sorts, a kind of self-confessed or intentionally knowing 'cult' that unlike  most cults, is fully aware beforehand that it -is- one, and formed with sincere intent to save the world , without being snowed by some charismatic leader who's in it for purely selfish gratification [ your name here].
here's my further idea: whoever you identify with in the cast of LOST, you can take that character's name as your moniker while you live in the community. you can use your own name or yours plus the character's or whatever works for you. it's perfectly alright if there is more than one; it's understood that each character in LOST is an archetype, and everyone who comes is working out a personal thing they feel, in parallel to the character they identify with.
[ myself, i think i'd identify with rousseau and live like her].

i see this ARG as a place people could move to and live, every day,   or come to for a visit, on vacation, or also operate it like a bit of a theme park to make some money, amuse ourselves and have some work leading the day guests around like  tour guides, but naturally, as ourselves, for the reasons we came to live there.
it's ok for curiosity seekers and true beleivers alike. we'd be open to all of them.
the place could have personal projects  people want to build, to recreate such recognizable landmarks as the Black Rock, the Temple, the Orchid, Locke's well,  Eko's church he never finished, the Raft, versions one and two--and further iterations that haven't been tried yet...do you guys see what i'm picturing?

it WOULD be an alternate reality. it would be Living LOST. you could  focus on whatever it is about the world of LOST and the Island and the story or characters that draws you in and makes you keep coming back. if you were disappointed that the story arc took a turn away from what you wanted it to be, for yourself, you could stop time at the point you last liked most, and take it in your own direction from there.  in this world, desmond doesn't blow up the swan hatch. arzt doesn't vaporize himself with old dynamite. nikki and paolo don't get buried alive and die. the smoke monster  is your personal fun to try to recreate, if you can.  if you're a Juliet, no doubt real babies will be conceived and born in the community, and can be birthed like aaron was, outdoors in nature, with a midwife, or  more modernly in the Medical Hatch, with real medical care with real doctors.

members might very well think they act like one character, and the community might come to  decide the person acts more like another. a manipulative sort might get called 'Ben', a fickle, nervous girl might be tagged 'Kate', a know-it- all who always has to take over and take control would be quickly called for being a Jack. a girl who was snobby and bratty, spoiled and vain  would be treated as a Shannon--  you get the idea. it would be one way to nail people on their crap and not let them get away with it--or to humor them and go along with it, in full acceptance and common knowledge of how they are, openly.
you could  live however you like. anywhere on the continuum, from beach camp primitive to New Otherton Modern
or somewhere in between.
"no, we would not have a giant wheel powered by hamsters running on it"--not unless you wanted to build something and try it, as an alternative energy source. having the
Dharma Initiative leaves room for men of Science, the Temple is for men of Faith. and all the shades in between.

so what do you guys think?  would you come live or vacation there, if there was such a place?  does this concept have legs?

i could see actually doing this.even doing it with ABC's permission, once the show finishes filming .

i'm gonna go on, adding my ideas as they come to me, but don't let that stop any of you from putting yours in.
i could see why someone might want to reclassify this topic as fan fiction--but i really do think we could make such a place in the real world. there IS land in hawaii. it COULD be done.

I thought about buying 3 apartments in Manhatten and getting my best friends to move in. One set on one side the other across the way. Finding a nerdy friend and getting him to live nearby. We could all have sex with each other and get into comedic escapades. I'd fix up a remote laughter track incase any of us made a funny.  laugh

Ahhhhh Yep, its amazing how fast you can lose friends  Undecided

sounds like a 'live together or die alone' kinda pact to me. see? we're starting it already.

there really are tracts of real estate in hawaii where people live  in a cooperative kind of colony, growing their own food, building their own kind of shelters, catching the rainfall for water, showering outdoors, and so forth. if you search the hawaii craigslist under real estate for sale, you can see the kind of thing that's on offer.  i inherited some money when my father died this year, but no enough to be able to buy a big enough tract of land to do this.

i'm wondering if there would be enough people worldwide who are into LOST to make such a community worth trying to form. and would ABC/ Disney regard it as a project worth backing.  Disney sure has experience with building fantasy theme parks, wouldn't you say??
I would think they'd know an opportunity when they see one.

you guys haven't really taken this seriously yet. or maybe not enough members have read it yet to consider the idea.

maybe a better question to ask would be, if you could live in the world of LOST, of all the places we've seen in the show so far, where could you see yourself living?  i mean on the Island-not tunisia or london or Portland or something...[wiseguys...].

myself, i liked the caves better than the beach camp--and i liked the swan but not for too long, cause i'd get claustrophobic and want to get back outdoors...and New Otherton was just too horribly 50's ticky tacky for me. that's the kind of stuff i'd wanna get away from.

the Flame was a lot like a place i could see myself building to live in--minus the roomful of electronics, tho.
didn't like the medical hatch at all...
nor the hydra.
the arrow had possibilities, if it was fixed up and furnished.
the pearl would be for some media freak, who likes a wall o monitors...that could be our community security watch system. a webcam in every home and volunteers to man the screens to keep safety. LOL. motion detector infrared beams to trigger smokie from the bushes, and dinosaur roars and whispers from hidden loudspeakers,  if you blunder into turf someone doesn't want you entering.
there'd have to be someone living on a sailboat/houseboat...anyone think someone could bring a submarine?...jacob's cabin would be built, for sure...and those yurty cabanas where we saw bea klugh hold micheal...rousseau's underground bunker is doable..someone could make the rope bridge that hurley crossed, but this time it doesn't break...
and the caves don't collapse..

and i doubt it would be OK with the hawaian government if dead people just got buried like boone was, on the beach, or adam and eve in the caves.   we can bury our dead pets, ok, but not people...

do you guys think i'm nuts for getting too 'into' this? or is this a decent idea to really pursue? is anyone else into this?

i'm defintely into it... i just dont think its very plausible...
if it ever happens though... i'll be the first one to plane-crash-move-in

but no jack douche bags... and it could just be a summer thing, like a camp sorta and we can all get there and chillax for 3 months or something (less for people with jobs laugh)

but it doesnt really seem plausible, what would we do for money? it could only occur during specific periods of the year so people can take time off work to do it... plus we would need sponsorship from ABC, otherwise we would get sued.

I have a friend who took at job at the university.  He says while Hawaii is beautiful, it's also isolating.  Just one person's opinion.

I'd go...capitalism might prevent it though...I'd need a large settlement from an accident or something, maybe a survivable plane crash.  Grin

I could do the Manhattan thing, but would it involve Jennifer Anisten or Julia Dreyfuss?

I hope you have a lot of money to this, but If you want this to be as real as possible, you'd want to find a real island somewhere. That nobody can stumble upon. Build your community and all your little hatches, invite some scientists over and your set.  Invite me to be your musician though please  Grin

In one of those 'what would you do with million dollars' stupid questions the most obvious answer is to buy an island and build a Dharma Initiative there. For real. Not as an ARG thing, but with real scientific hippies. (And it can be called differently, but HATCHES WE MUST HAVE!)

And if someone else does it, I'm totally going in, even as a workman!

Not sure about Hawaii tho, but there are some great islands out there in the world for sale.

I am so totally down with this idea that it scares me.
I would for sure live on an island and espouse the ideals of LOST.
How do we get this going?
I agree it should be our own island though, screw hawaii.
We probably need a couple Million to buy an island though.
And that seems like a lot of money for a bunch of forum grubbers like us to produce.
