okay, lets roll upt the whole map thing again:

saiyd has seen alot of the island (drugplane, rosseau´s area etc), charlie has already been quite far away from the camp (saving claires baby ??!!, drugplane, thet episode where hurley tries to find out about the numbers) and finally ana lucia came all the way from the other side of the island. now if wee look at the episodes you see there are som indices which can be remembered or used as orientation (bridge from numbers, the mountain in the middle of the island, the trails they remeber, the cable etc.). if you have a quite good orientation (youre supposed to have a good one as ballon pilot, soldier whatever...) you can make a map by using the things you know about the island! okay it wouldnt be exact but if gales ballon crashed in an area they just might have strafed they could find it!
in my opinion ist possible to make a quite exact topography map of an area you trid to survived on for mor than a month...

besides that.... lets say gale says the truth its possible to find out how far away the ballon is from the point they catched him by using math....the average walking speed of an adult man (including breaks) for a day multiplicated by days of wandering. then you can also find out the maximum radius of the area to search for the balloon.....and if there are any topogrphical clues on the map gale has drawn, which the sayid, charlie or ana know its quite easy to find the balloon

You do have some valid points, and i suppose he could draw them a map from the point of where he got captured by Danielle.

Lol motormouth, thats satisfied my curiousity! If he was in the balloon too he would've had a birds eye view before he crashed making it even easier to pick out major topographical points.

one possibility: have you ever seen a ballon crash? its not like "fuel low! and BAMMMMMM.....even if it happened like this (meybe the basket was ripped of the balloon  ): when the island doesnt just appear in the second you crash like a fata morgana he would have seen major topographical points form miles away!

2nd possibility: it was night he crashed and he then eamined the area until he was caught by rosseau...i mean: if you crashd on an island and examined it wouldnt you remember "special places" like a beach i dunno a waterfall whatever and the way back to the place where you crashed???
so lets say ana lucia saiyd or charlie saw one of this places...they could find the balloon

i dont say i think gale says the truth is just want so say its possible to draw a map just from top of the head

The birds eye view theory would allow him to give an X marks the spot style map. It's not buried treasure they are looking for - it's several square metres of brightly hued fabric (silk?) so it doesn't need to state 15 paces north from the anvil shaped rock!
But another theory would lead to the same map and explain the existence of a balloon. An elaborate cover story concocted in case any of "the others" were captured;  the balloon is a planted to substantiate the deceit. He could easily claim he couldn't remember where he buried his wife - disorientation.
The French woman - now confirmed to be a good 'un was pretty certain he was a wrong 'un. Her word is good enough for me. (But then she thought that of the Iraqi!)
The Iraqi thinks he's a wrong 'un. He knows his stuff, he says.
He's a bit ugly - kind of weaselly. This being a US drama that is a big giveaway cf Ethan Rom.
Also if he's not a wrong 'un how is he going to contribute positively to the storyline? Escape via zeppelin, I think not.

Sun had a moment of weakness and shacked up with gud ole Steve... i believe it all happened in the herb garden.... how do i know this?  It came to me in a dream

It could be the hobbit. He could have slipped her the magic trouser finger after hitting her over the head while pretending to be an abductor. (There must be some comeback from that episode - he can't simply get away with it.)
