This is a quick one, please let me know what you think...

There are plenty of threads here that explain that meeting yourself if you travel back in time is catastrophic; the universe would cease to be, scientists get huffy (ie the bunnies at the Swan hatch), etc. 
In one of the more recent episodes, Charlotte the Red ends up dying about two flashes before she potentially would have met her younger self.  Here is my theory, that this may be a way that the universe keeps the flow of time in check by making it more and more unbearable to be so close to yourself.  Kind of like two magnets... 
Charlotte was a sure-fire candidate for this "time-disease" if this is the case, she was living on the island as a child, her symptoms started first and were the most advanced.  I can't remember exactly the order in which the other losties started the nosebleeds, but I'm willing to bet that this means something (I'll go back to piling mashed potatoes on my dining room table now).

Are you saying that the "time-disease" nosebleed thing may be relative their proximity (in time) to themselves?

That may be true if any of them were going to experience, "seeing themselves".  As far as I can tell, she'd be the only one in the group that would have that happen.

she wasnt the only one with a nosebleed. she was the one with the severest because her past self is the closest... the possibility of her meeting herself is the largest...

I liked this suggestion when I first read it, but then thought about it and now don't agree.

If it was the case that the closer they get to themselves in time the more unbearable the effects of the nosebleed sickness became, then Sawyer's head should have exploded as he watched Claire have the baby, meaning that he was very close to his past self, as was Locke.

But he didn't.  I don't want to overthink this theory because it is far fetched, but it could be that if you were going to see yourself, this sort of self correction would happen.  They have been in the 70's for years, she definitely would have encountered herself.  Sawyer's past-self wasn't close when he saw Clair have the baby, but his nosebleeds did start after that.  Time will tell.

i actually agree with this theory. Ive been thinking that since she was on island before the other ppl she so to speak got saturated with the ions of the island and like two magnets they cant touch on the same side.. maybe her negative ions of the past met her negative ions in the present made a shift in energy and mad her sick..

kinda like that guy on the freighter that had been sick.. same thing

I also agree, to some degree. Possibly the universe course corrects during its course correction, if you will. Maybe Sawyer's head didn't explode because the universe knew that Sawyer would never have had enough time to do anything while they were there, in that 'time', during  the 'time' of the births, so it wasn't an issue. Maybe Charlotte being in the 'time' of her childhood would have been a different story, and the universe said, 'Sowwwyyy, Charlotte. You dead.'

well, as Bigbad started off this thread, it might be important to note in what order the nosebleeds started for that particular group.  Was it: charlotte, juliet, miles, sawyer and jin in that order, with daniel never getting them?  I have no time to go watch again unfortunately cuz I'd love to.  In any case, this order of the first nosebleed would imply who spent more time on the island, and I suppose it makes sense so far, except for the daniel issue.

I do like the idea of this theory but i dont really agree with it, John was close to his past self when they saw the light from the hatch, and if he had wanted to go and have a chat they seemed to have time
